When We Have Dreamed Too Little

Sir Francis Drake, the great explorer, uttered this prayer on a cold day in 1577 … I think it’s applicable to you and I, right here, right now.

“Disturb us, Lord,
When we are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.”

There is nothing more dangerous in life than comfort.

The repose of stagnation draws you ever nearer to a precipice where you begin to accept, settle, and acquiesce to the whims of whatever circumstance or paradigm or context the world has trapped you in.

But always remember, my friend, that while society has been cultivated over thousands of years to provide you with limits, to keep order, to ensure that you don’t drift too distant from the standard deviation lest you cause a commotion … you were not made to fit in, you are here to change the world … and people like us can’t afford to be too damn comfortable.

From a quieter end of London,

Your Fellow Misfit,

Ps – Today, I am releasing a fun, new piece I’ve been working on over at Trendy Misfit. It’s our very first Artisan Pillow, which is adorned by a hand drawn illustration, and the quote There is Nothing More Dangerous in Life than Comfort. The throw pillow is an extremely limited edition, handcrafted 11×7 inch hand-stitched art piece based on the quote from The Life & Times of a Remarkable Misfit. It was made in collaboration with my dear friend, Annie, who is the owner and head boss lady of junk at one of my favorite shops in the world, Redoux in downtown Fargo. This product will be available on Trendy Misfit until the end of the month, but as usual, each day the sale price will increase by one dollar.

Oh, and here’s a little video sharing Annie’s story and a behind the scenes glance at this little art project.
