All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. William Shakespeare

Fake it til you make it. Oprah Winfrey

On a rainy October 25th in 1415, King Henry the Fifth found himself in a field called Agincourt, surrounded by a vitriolic French army preemptively celebrating his demise. His men were sick, demoralized, far from home, surrounded and outnumbered 5 to 1. At the eve of the battle, a French Herald came to speak to Henry, offering a ransom. A deal where Henry could save himself by paying a tribute to the French King. Outgunned, outmanned and at the very precipice of catastrophic defeat, Henry furiously glares at the Herald and bellows, “I pray thee, bear my former answer back: Bid them achieve me and then sell my bones! … Come thou no more for ransom, herald, for they shall have none, I swear, but these my joints! Which if they have as I will leave ’em them, shall yield them little.”

My dear friend Jonathan Fields once told me a story about an interview a correspondent at a major health magazine was doing with him about a piece of research he had pioneered proving that Yoga could indeed burn many more calories than conventional thought suggested. Towards the end of the interview, the correspondent asks him if he had a product or a DVD series she could reference in the article. He said, “It’s funny you ask, we’re actually wrapping up our last day of shooting today. When does the piece go to print? I’ll be sure to send you a copy before that.” He hangs up the phone, calls his assistant into his office and says, “Find me a production company, we need to make a Power Yoga DVD this week.”

Swagger is one of the great unsung characteristics of those that make magic happen.

Always remember this.

Confidence is not nearly as important as courage. And feeling like you can pull it off is not nearly as important as acting like you can.

I believe Anais Nin says it best, in the end, life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s own courage.
