For the First Time

Remember the elation you felt the very first time you witnessed fresh water flow in your neighborhood, just knowing that your family would finally be able to have access to safe drinking water?

Yeah, me neither.

That’s because you and I are blessed to live in a country where we never have to worry about confronting the basic essentials of life as a human on this planet.

As you may know, about 90 days ago, Melissa, Jessie and I shipped off to Kaniche and Bokola villages in Malawi to work with WaterAid to craft and launch a fundraising and awareness campaign that would eventually bring sanitation programs and safe drinking water to 185,000 Malawians. Here is a soundcloud I took from Bokola of the wonderful women greeting us.

The project was called The Big Dig, and to all of our utter shock and delight has raised over $3,100,000 in just three months.

Yesterday, a crew from WaterAid returned to Kaniche and Bokola to finish the job we started.

For the very first time, these beautiful people that I met, my friends, have access to safe and clean drinking water.

Words do no justice.

Here are some photos from Mike and Nathan, the brilliant locals that we trained on the art of digital storytelling. What they captured is leaving me with no desire to continue writing. Only to say this, you can still help. This week, you can skip one latte or vegan cupcake and help someone a world away from your own. And if you can’t do that, then you can at least share their story and ours, so that people might know that Misfits can indeed change the world, in fact, I’m sure we are the only ones who ever have.

Your fellow Misfit,

You can view more real-time photos over on thebigdig.orgIf you’d like to donate to The Big Dig, you can do so here. If you’re in the UK, the British government is sweetening the deal by matching your donation for the next couple days.

ps – As you might have seen on the twitters, I found a bus! I’m spending the weekend Misfit-ing it up and by next Wednesday I’ll finally be able to get the hell out of LA! I’ll definitely take some before and after photos so you can see what we’re working with over here. 🙂
