“Fairy Tales are more than true, not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten”. GK Chesterson
Today I’m announcing the launch of a creative publishing project that I have been working on for close to six months now. The Misfit Quarterly is a handcrafted compilation of the distinguished work of the most talented poets, artists, writers and photographers that you have never heard of.
What started as a fervid, chocolate croissant-fueled chat in my favorite British cafe about contemporary poetry and art and their place in the post-industrial age, culminated into this fully baked Misfit project. Over the past four years of traveling the wide world, I have had the great pleasure of meeting talented poets and artists and writers of every possible kind, whose labored and radiant work could move mountains if only the world could have known of it. The Misfit Quarterly is my small contribution to provide a stage for this work and to share it as widely as possible, and to compensate them for the courage it takes to make a dent in the universe.
In the end, after announcing the project in June, we received over 450 submissions from artists all over the world. Matt, Jessie, Melissa and myself worked diligently selecting the pieces for this first edition, attempting to curate a final product that was both provocative and inspiring, wrapped in a message of living with intention, doing work that matters and changing the world.
And I am so pleased to finally share it with you.
The Misfit Quarterly is a creative publishing project brought to you by myself and my band of remarkable misfits at Misfit Incorporated. It is a creative arts magazine dedicated to facilitating and promoting creative art, in all of it’s various forms, for the Digital Generation. Our vision is to find the most talented poets, photographers, writers and artists that you have never heard of, and provide them with a beautifully-handcrafted platform to share their art with the world.
The digital version of The Misfit Quarterly is and will always be free. I want as many people as possible on this beautiful planet to be as inspired by these creators as I have been. We will also produce a Limited Edition print version of each Misfit Quarterly which you can read more about below.
Fill out the form here, and we will send a copy right over. Yes, it’s that easy. Our only request is this: please consider taking the time to share these artists’ work with your friends and family and with the art loving world as you know it. You can tweet or stumble or like or plus this article to help us get the word out.
Again, if you would like to get a free copy of the digital version of the Misfit Quarterly sent to your inbox, just click here.
There will be no way to purchase individual print editions of The Misfit Quarterly.
What I will be announcing in just a couple weeks is the Honorary Misfit membership, for those who want to support the vision of the Misfit Quarterly. Honorary Misfits will essentially become annual members of Misfit’s creative projects. Honorary Misfits will receive one Limited Edition print copy of each Misfit Quarterly (4 per year) to place on your desk or cafe or underground bunker or generally just to look super trendy in front of your hipster friends. Honorary Misfits will also receive super secret dispatches about all of Misfit’s other creative projects, products, events and general troublemaking around the world. Trust me, it will be worth it, the Misfit’s are cooking up some crazy stuff over the next twelve months. Also, you will be entitled to at least one hug and chocolate croissant if ever our paths cross during my 1,080 day trip around the world. 🙂
We are only accepting a handful of Honorary Misfits at this time. If you would like to get a heads up before we launch the membership, click here.
Note: If you don’t want to become an Honorary Misfit, but want to get your hands on a Limited Edition print version of the Misfit Quarterly, you can also pop into one of the many coffee shops I will be planting copies in as I travel the world and steal one from there.
The cost to produce a project of this scale is not insignificant.
Between design costs and printing costs and paying each contributor and editors, the investment to produce the Misfit Quarterly has been sizable. But I have and will continue to fund the entire project myself because I believe in it. Because I know in my heart that there are misfits out there that the traditional publishing world has overlooked because they don’t quite “fit in”, because they don’t quite have the proper credentials as writers or poets or photographers or artists – and I intend to find them and to give them a beautiful place to show the world what they can do.
I cannot express how much the Misfits and I have enjoyed every single, solitary moment of handcrafting this edition just for you.
I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
And more importantly, I hope you will be inspired to create works of art of your own. And I hope you will feel compelled to share them with the world.
Your Fellow Misfit,
