Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.
Vincent Van Gogh said that. And I truly believe it.
And in many ways, I bring that ideology to my work. The last five months has been a blur of creativity for me, between the launch of [pursuitofeverything.com], the beginning of my journey to travel around the world, the publishing of the digital version of The Life & Times of a Remarkable Misfit, the Misfit Quarterly, and the Honorary Misfit program (and quite a few other small projects) – I feel as though I’ve just been constantly making things for five months … and of course, I’m loving every solitary second of it.
Today, I’m excited to announce a new Misfit project that I’ve been contemplating the viability of for quite some time … saddle up.
On May 31 – June 1, the Misfits and I will be producing Misfit Conf:Fargo, a tiny conference about making a huge dent in the Universe.
Misfit Conf is an intimate 2 day event of no more than 30 or so misfits in Fargo, the quintessence of the American Midwest and a town I first fell in love with when I took a train ride around the US a couple years ago. Fargo itself is a misfit. A tiny town in the middle of the country with one main street that is home to a legion of independent artists and musicians and craftspeople. It’s the perfect place for you and I to spend a couple of days conspiring.
This is not a conference for normal people.
My merry band of Misfits and I are designing the entire experience of Misfit Conf:Fargo with you, a bonafide misfit, in mind. There will be no shitty conference food and drab cocktails. No watered down seminars with everyone half listening. No phones or laptops allowed in the room. No boring people or bad coffee. No getting lost in a massive crowd.
This is a deliberately tiny event handcrafted to help you walk out and change the world.
The vision of Misfit Conf
is simply this: to empower you to march out and make a dent in the Universe.
What do I mean by this?
We will spend two days producing individual workshops on very specific elements about how to build a profitable business with a Purpose that allows you to live a life of intention while helping those less fortunate than you.
Here are some of the topics/sessions that we are bouncing around now:
How to build a $5,000 website on a $250 budget
The ROI of being a Changemaker: How doing Free Work may be the most profitable enterprise for your business.
The Economics of Crazy: Learn how and why to double down when everything inside you tells you to be safe.
Personal Legend: How to identify your Life’s Work in a project-centric world.
Kickstarter Hacks: How to tell a story, provide value and raise capital for your projects on Kickstarter.
Rise of The Cubicle Farmer: A Case study on a profitable, sponsor-powered American road trip that changed our business forever.
Writing your very own Revolution: How becoming a better writer can help you identify and lead a small, dedicated revolution of your own.
I chose a very unique location for Misfit Conf for a reason.
I also want this experience to be about going on the adventure of a lifetime. I want you to be exposed to new things in a new place. In addition to the content of the conference itself, the goal is to provide new experiences – a sunrise photowalk, attending an indie art gallery, eating local cuisine, drinking artisan coffee, listening to some local folk music as well as a few other fun activities that I will be uncovering in the next couple weeks.
Additionally, I will also invite some of my brilliant friends to join us and share their experiences about how to change the world. Believe me, you will not want to miss this.
Here’s the thing.
Because there are very few spaces available at the conference, we had to make the tickets available by application. If you are available on those dates, are a bonafide misfit, are hell bent on changing the world and have a specific project that you are working on or are looking to launch, then I think this tiny conference in the middle of nowhere might just be for you.
The price is $450.
The conference is on May 31 – June 1. We will be in Fargo (that’s in North Dakota, just in case you were wondering). It will be badass. And more importantly, I believe it might just help you march out and make a dent in the Universe.
If you are sure you want to join me in Fargo, please visit the Misfit Conf website, and fill out the short application form.

We will be accepting applications to Misfit Conf until next Friday. After that, my super secret group of Jedi’s who helped me give away the trip of a lifetime and $50,000 worth of work will help me select folks who get spaces at the inaugural Misfit Conf.
Oh, and if you don’t get a ticket, no worries, I will be recording all the workshops and will set up a private space where only those who applied get access to the videos.
Thank you for reading this and for being here and for being part of this journey with me. There are just no words to express how much it means.
Here’s to a rag tag bunch of misfits sojourning to Fargo and conspiring to change the world!
Your Fellow Misfit,
Ps – If you know someone who might want to join me in Fargo, please share this link with them this weekend, okay?
Pps – Here is a very short video I shot of a lovely gift I received from a member of our community, a Blacksmith Artist in Ireland, a blog post written by a teacher in Rhode Island who shared my manifesto with her students, and an interview I did about the foodie life of a nomad with Katie, a food blogger in Australia.
